What Is Intelligence?

We are all intelligent at something.

Whether it be video games, quantum mechanics, pop culture trivia, or computer programming, it’s all a matter of specializing in your chosen field.

Disagree? Think about it this way…

If you were watching a Call of Duty tournament and the winner won a million-dollar grand prize, would they not be seen as being highly intelligent, then?

Likewise, quantum physicists are typically regarded as being highly intelligent, but place them in the hot seat of that same Call of Duty tournament and they would be like a fish out of water.

Or how about that pop culture trivia expert? Would they not kill it on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”—easily making their way through the set of questions, would we not consider them to be highly intelligent?

And that high-level computer programming expert; they may be highly intelligent when it comes to developing Artificial Intelligence, but they can fall short when it comes to being sociable or displaying adequate “people-skills”.

Boiled down, our idea of Intelligence is simply a unit of measure, where the independent variable is our Knowledge on a specific subject and the dependent variable is widespread Utility.

We only regard a person as being more so or less intelligent than another, simply because of the subjective constructs of our imagined scenarios.

So, if you’re that video game expert, or pop culture trivia superstar, take solace in the fact that you, too, are also highly intelligent! The question is—is that the kind of intelligent you want to be? And what’s more, is it more important to be a specialist or a generalist in life?

That’s totally up to you to decide.
